Kshitigarbha, the protector of the spirits of the dead, especially deceased children, is a highly venerated bodhisattva in East Asian Buddhism. Often regarded as the intermediate state of Bardo, which, in Buddhism, is a state between life and death, Kshitigarbha is known for guiding lost souls towards the light in the underworld. It is believed that housing figurines and statues of Kshitigarbha brings in good blessings and averts danger. The beautiful hand-crafted statue of Khsitigarbha is molded in copper by Milushree Art’s finest artisans, and gilded with 24k mercury gold. 24 karat gold dust envelops the statue’s serene face, with acrylic colors used to decorate the statue’s opulent features. Precious stones like rubies, lapis lazuli, and coral are also embedded in the statue, upon the bodhisattva's crown, and in the ornaments that adorn his silhouette.

The statue depicts Kshitigarbha presiding atop a lotus throne and carrying his wish-granting jewel, called the Chintamani. His left hand is embossed with the Buddist symbol of the Earth, which further insinuates Khsitigarbha’s translated moniker that expounds as “the Womb of the Earth”. Each aspect of the statue is intricately detailed, with each line and indentation painstakingly hand-shaped by our craftsmen in the traditional fashion.

“If Hell is not empty, I shall not attain Buddhahood” _ Vow by Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva

Kshitigarbha’s lore began eons ago, when he vowed to save all beings who were in the most horrific and hopeless of situations. For this reason, Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva is known as “The King of Great Vows”; he confronts tortured souls and accepts their suffering upon himself. He is also the patron deity and guardian of deceased children, and in the Japanese culture, protector of aborted fetuses. He is also one of the four major principal bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism, and his iconography can be seen in many Buddhist-centered cultures around Asia, extant in the form of mantras and sutras to senryu and haiku.

All of Milushree Art’s statues and products are compassionately crafted by our master sculptors, artists, and metal smiths. Each of our pieces is unique, with distinct attributes molded through passion and devotion to the craft.
